Ian Duthie’s passion for teaching is a natural extension of his personal passion for music, from recording to playing to working on the business side of the industry.

Graduating the Guitar Institute of Technology program at Musicians Institute in Los Angeles, California is merely scratching the surface of the experience, passion and lifelong dedication to the guitar and music for Ian. Through the years he has worked for one of the largest record companies in the world as well as with some of Nashville’s top producers, studio engineers and session players. He has been with Sky Studios for nearly a decade, where he dedicates himself to the advancement of students, sharing his knowledge and passion in the pursuit of their individual goals.

Prior to his career at Sky Studios, Ian worked at Warner Bros. Records, giving him major label experience during the careers of artists such as Faith Hill, Keith Urban, Travis Tritt, Randy Travis, Little Texas, Jeff Foxworthy and Dwight Yoakam. He also worked as an assistant engineer at Seismic Sound in the post production mixing for national broadcast and DVD releases with clients such as CMA Country Music Fest and Country Crossroads. As a guitar player, Ian has performed nationally and internationally and has also been considered for guitar positions with Ozzy Osbourne, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Lita Ford, Slaughter and The Bullet Boys.

In addition to his work at Sky Studios, Ian owns a home studio and production company where he produces indie records and works on custom projects from singer-songwriter demos to full band productions. He also performs with several bands including a Rolling Stones Tribute band (Jaggered Edge), a corporate wedding band (The Ties) and a blues duet, as well as several singer songwriters.

Top three desert island albums:

  • The Essential Stevie Ray Vaughan And Double Trouble

  • Robert Johnson – The Centennial Collection

  • Led Zeppelin – Mothership

Favorite places in Nashville/Brentwood:

  • Visiting with my brother and family, hanging with my two awesome nephews and watching Alabama football games. Roll Tide!

  • Eating Hot Chicken (Prince’s, Hattie B’s, Roosters)

  • Sky Studios. Working in an environment like this is a blessing. I get to share music, knowledge and inspiration and learn from my students at the same time. In a world with, at times, some challenging and toxic dynamics, I think it’s safe to say that this is an oasis.

Why do you love music?

Music is primal. It’s in the fabric of our empathic beings. It expresses feeling and speaks to the soul. What a gift. Someone can listen to a record that they listened to when they were younger and it takes them back to those memories. Likewise when performing music you can convey your feelings on a deeper level than with words alone.
